Laser hair removal is the process of hair removal by means of exposure to pulses of laser light that target pigment in the hair and destroy the hair follicle. It had been performed experimentally for about twenty years before becoming commercially available in the mid-1990s. It can be performed on just about any part of the body except the eyelids. It works best for darker hair. White or gray hair typically does not respond well.
Men and women of all ages opt for laser hair removal when shaving, tweezing, or waxing is no longer their preferred method. Although not 100% permanent, treatment greatly reduces the number of unwanted hairs in a particular area and can have long-lasting effects. Heating the hair follicle stops new hairs from growing, and with regular treatments can provide the kind of results most patients desire – less unwanted facial hair, a manicured bikini line, etc. Treatment results vary by individual. Most patients will require a series of treatments every 4-6 weeks at the beginning, often followed by “touch-ups” once or twice a year to maintain results.
