What is it?
The medical answer is Botulinum toxin. It is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction, thus preventing muscle contraction.
The simpler answer is this: Botox® is administered by injection and works by interfering with the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. Upon receiving a Botox® injection, muscles relax and smooth out to reduce the appearance of creases and lines.
