Photorejuvenation encompasses a variety of skin treatments that use lasers, intense pulsed light or photodynamic therapy to treat the skin and remove effects of aging such as wrinkles, dark surface spots, and “textures” deemed unsightly or bothersome. You may inquire about photorejuvenation if you have:
- Age spots
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven skin tone
- Enlarged oil glands
- Rosacea
- Small vessels or “spider veins”
Results vary based on the condition being treated and a patient’s natural skin tones. Patients with lighter skin tones are often good candidates because they carry a reduced risk of hyperpigmentation. That doesn’t mean it’s only for those with light skin… a skilled, experienced medical professional knows which types of lasers work best for darker skin tones.
There are 2 types of lasers, ablative or non-ablative. Ablative lasers include carbon dioxide (CO2) or Erbium. Ablative laser resurfacing treatments are used to treat scars, skin lesions and deep wrinkles. Ablative lasers remove the outside layers of the skin, whereas non-ablative lasers don’t remove any skin layers. There are several types of non-ablative lasers that are used to treat skin conditions like age spots, uneven skin tone, rosacea, spider veins and fine lines/wrinkles.
The results of laser procedures are unique to the individual receiving treatment. Always consult with a medical professional to explore your options.
